Gisborne to Te Araroa

A walk along Wainui Beach this morning to meet my hosts granddaughters and carry back Barbie, beach bum. Sultry, and that was just the weather.

On the way back we visited textile artist Morva Thompson at her studio, just to feel the vibe.

Cook's Couriers came to fetch me and delivered The Gisborne Herald and loads of parcels as we travelled north. Tolaga Bay, Tokomaru Bay and Ruatoria intrigued me...paradisical places but low key lifestyles. Dogs on utes.

At Te Araroa I was taken to see the marae by Mrs Cook, the whare nui feels like a home. Wonderful tukituki panels.

The whare kai is brilliant, I found a weta with a speaking part in a larger pig hunting mural.

And you can't talk about Te Araroa without mentioning the huge old Pohutukawa. It has already finished flowering so here's a blast from Wainui Beach.
