Te Araroa to Lottin Point

The rain stopped overnight and I've had a hot humid 23.5km hike today. First port of call was Hicks Bay, under that steam is a modest neat little village with an excellent general store that opens at 7.30am. I sat on the park bench outside and had a bacon and egg pie for breakfast, of course. Very big Toyota Hi-Lux trucks, every accessory on board (eg twin point tow anchors) parked up, so hungry chatty men could fuel themselves for the day.

As I walked on, a bit of roadside rumbled down in front of me. First slip I've watched.

This is State Highway 35. It tracks through swampy farmland with puriri and karamu on the verges and bees humming in manuka flowers.

What a nice surprise to find two chairs (on the right) waiting for a tired walker! I sat there enjoying cheerful waves from oncoming vehicles.

Further along I met Apirana on his quad bike, a former shearer who now grows beef animals and honey. He's not vaccinated, hasn't needed a doctor for 40 years. (Fingers crossed he stays that way).

I was very happy to take the turnoff towards Potaka, or Lottin Point. I think I've just seen the only farm I've ever wished to own.

Lottin Point is exquisite. Remains of kina under the trees indicate it's a top snorkeling spot.

I've washed clothes, had a coffee, taken stock. Bruised hips from the pack, a raw toe and a rash on each calf from the gaiters. About average for  74.9 km.
